Elsa was nominated by Mrs Johnson who said: “Elsa took part in the Discover Articulation Challenge organised by the School of Fine Art, History of Art & Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds. The challenge required students to film themselves talking about a chosen piece of artwork. Elsa’s choice was Caravaggio’s “The Supper at Emmaus”. Her video entry was judged by academic staff and staff from the National Gallery. Several hundred students sent in their videos but only six were chosen as finalists, of which one was Elsa. The criteria for selection were as follows:
“The students who were selected for the Final were able to engage the audience and speak enthusiastically about their chosen artwork, and made their presentation in a visually interesting manner. Finalists clearly demonstrated they had researched their chosen piece of art thoroughly. They were able to use the artwork’s political, social and/or cultural context when assessing the piece. Successful students explored the artist’s method, materials and intention and were able to show their own creativity within their analysis. They often used smaller details of the image to help illustrate their points, and were also able to compare and contrast the piece of art to other works, either by the same artist or other artists. Structurally they had a clear introduction and conclusion, and covered their ideas, processes and research in detail. Overall, the most successful students took us with them on their journey to discover their chosen work of art and what it means to them.”
On Wednesday 12th June, Elsa and her family attended the Final at the university. They were given a tour of the Arts Facilities and had lunch with the faculty staff before the judging took place. The adjudicators were Joseph Kendra and Emily Stone, both from the National Gallery. They then announced that Elsa had won the competition!
Elsa is to be congratulated for this fantastic achievement. Throughout the process she clearly demonstrated our CREDIT values of creativity, resilience, determination and independence and she sets a fine example for others to follow.”
