YEAR 9 STUDENTS THROUGH TO REGIONAL HEATS OF MIDDLEBROUGH FOOTBALL CLUB’S PROTECT THE PLANET CHALLENGE

A group of 23 Year 9 students have been working on several social action projects linked to environmental sustainability at Middlesbrough Football Club (MFC). They went to MFC to take part in the area heats of the Protect the Planet Challenge where they presented their ideas to a four-strong judging panel. The judges were representatives from Middlesbrough Football club, Middlesbrough Foundation and Middlesbrough Academy. In total, there were multiple teams from ten different schools taking part in the competition including a team from Stokesley School.

We are delighted that Ashley, Emmee May, Lily-Mae and Josh’s group was the overall winner. The students will now go on to represent MFC at a regional level on 5th July, with the potential of qualifying for the national competition.

Marshall Dixon, Project Officer at Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation, said: “We were all really impressed with the students and their presentations; showing the hard work they had put in across this half term and the knowledge they had taken onboard, in relation to both presenting and environmental sustainability!”

The judges were very complimentary about all the groups and their ideas, while the rest of the MFC team were really impressed with the conduct of students across the afternoon. The winning group’s presentation to help make the club more eco-friendly was for them to create a Bootplant room in which old football boots could be used to store and grow plants, with any boots that are in a good condition to be donated to those who are unable to afford new ones.

Ashley, Year 9 student, added: “I really enjoyed all the activities that were on offer whilst we were at Middlesbrough Football Club. I enjoyed coming up with our social action project and although I was nervous when we started delivering our idea to the panel, I soon felt at ease as they were really welcoming of our idea.”

Jessica Lambert, Catch-Up Tutor, said: “All the students have been really engaged in this project. The ideas they have come up with have been fantastic and it has been great to see them develop their concepts in their teams. On the day, the students took it all in their stride. They did a brilliant job of presenting to the panel which highlighted their determination. We are delighted that one of our teams was the overall winner and will go on to represent Middlesbrough Football Club in the regional heats.”

The students were sent a video from Riley McGree, Middlesbrough player, congratulating them on their winning entry – you can watch the video here.
