YEAR 9 RETAIN AREA CUP WITH DECISIVE VICTORY AGAINST EASINGWOLD

Mr. Swanwick, coach and manager of this year’s Year 9 football squad, provides a match report from another significant victory for Richmond School:

“Our Year 9 football team completed their competitive season by retaining the Area Cup with a workmanlike performance against Easingwold.

Having never faced our opponents before, we were going into the unknown and weren’t quite sure what to expect. It was clear from the start that Easingwold were a strong, technical team with plenty of pace and power in their side.

In hindsight, we never really produced our fluent best during the game, but at the 20 minute mark, Icha Gurung calmed the nerves with an exquisite effort from 20 yards. Having won the ball in midfield, he glided past two challenges then unleashed a rocket from outside the area that flew into the roof of the net.

We then doubled our lead five minutes later from a corner thanks to a tidy finish from Lars Bryan.

Despite going into half-time 2-0 up, there was a feeling in the group that we hadn’t quite performed at our best, especially off the ball, as Easingwold had controlled possession for long periods.

Into the second half and the game continued in a similar fashion. Again we didn’t quite hit our stride, however the combination of ice-cool Teddy Brain in goal and Josh Drought and Ollie Taylor managing to snuff out the Easingwold attacks meant we never truly seemed likely to concede. With 15 minutes remaining we added a third goal when Jamie Dent and Callum Dent combined down the right to find Jensen Pascoe at the back post to seal a 3-0 victory.

It has been a promising year for the Year 9 team. I certainly feel that the boys are improving and we will look to continue this as we go into Year 10, with hopefully decent cup runs in both the County and ESFA cups.

What pleases me the most about the Year 9 squad, however, are the number of students showing real commitment and enthusiasm to be involved. Next year we will continue to give as many opportunities as we can to every student that wants to play for the school team.”
