Kitty Curzon and Erin Preston, both Year 7 students at Richmond School, have been attending Northallerton’s Encore Dance Studio for many years now – Erin since the age of two and Kitty, three – they really have grown up dancing there.
They dance in a wide range of disciplines, from ballet, jazz, modern and tap taught by Miss Helen, to acro, taught by Miss Rachel and commercial taught by Miss Kirstie. Note: This is how Kitty and Erin said we should write the names of their dance teachers!
Both Kitty and Erin enjoy the gymnastic element of their dancing, with an aerial – a no handed cartwheel – being a particular challenge. As you’d expect, they’ve both nailed it!

They have recently taken a series of exams, both of them gaining a distinction in their Grade 1 Ballet. They both described the complexity of the exam, including the multiple sections marked out of 20 and the first time they had been examined on their barre work.
More recently, they have taken their Grade 3 Modern, Grade 2 Tap and Bronze Jazz exams. Once again they described the demands of the exams, with flawless technique and rhythm being particularly challenging to maintain in some of the group pieces. Kitty said she might have made a very tiny mistake with the rhythm in her Modern exam and Erin said the same about her Tap. They’re both sure the examiners won’t have noticed!
Kitty and Erin are looking forward to finding out the results of these most recent exams and to taking part in upcoming performances including the Sam Turner’s fun day in the summer and the Encore Dance Studio showcase later on in the year.
We look forward to catching up with Kitty and Erin as their dance accomplishments accumulate!
