SPASE, or Stress and Practising the Art of Self-Expression, will be open to 15 young adults, aged 16-25. Beginning Thursday, January 30, 2020, this program aims to connect people with their emotions and others through mindful, artistic expression. Ten weekly art workshops will use a variety of mediums drawing, painting, mixed media and digital art to explore various emotional themes. These workshops, facilitated by local artists, will be held every Thursday night from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., with the final class being held on 2 April. Each workshop will be used to discuss, reflect on and depict a certain emotion in the form of a self-portrait. These portraits can be abstract or realistic. Especially designed by Janna Hudson, local artist and Public Health professional, this artist workshop was created for young adults as a safe space to discuss everyday stressors, emotions and coping mechanisms while promoting community involvement. The SPASE program aims to improve the overall health, well-being and quality of life for young adults through art, culture, and community engagement. Workshops are free and places are limited. Register by January 24 to guarantee your spot. Should there be an expressed interest, another daytime class may be provided, also on Thursdays. Those participating in the SPASE workshops will be selected to display their work at The Station from April 10-22 for an Artist Showcase during Stress Awareness Month. Each artist can select at least one self-portrait to showcase in the gallery, but participation is voluntary. Special preview for participants will be 10th of April at 6.30 p.m. Improving relationships between young adults and the community begins with active and ongoing connections, trust and cooperation. The Station is dedicated to promoting and providing more engagement opportunities to the young adults living in and around Richmond. The SPASE program was developed to empower young adults to become better leaders and community organisers. We will train participants to be volunteers and encourage an open exchange of ideas to make The Station a rewarding place for everyone.
