As part of the Heritage Schools’ Programme, all Year 8 students have had a ‘hands on’ session with Liam Beeton from the Green Howards Museum. In History the students have begun their study of the First World War and to complement their learning, Liam showed stud ents a wide selection of artefacts from the museum. Students have been able to handle some of the original artefacts as well as other replica items. Through the handling sessions, students have gained an insight into life in the trenches and the hardships endured. They were particularly enthused about having the chance to dress themselves up in a range of coats from soldiers in the First World War, whilst also trying helmets used by British, French and German troops. This helped them to gain an understanding of how uniforms changed throughout the course of the war due to the conditions they faced. Students were engaged throughout in what was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for them and their behaviour was exemplary.
