Myles was nominated by Mr Giddens, our Senior Maintenance Officer, who said: “Having little, if anything, to do with the students, I wouldn’t usually get involved in HTVCA; however, there is a student I see every day called Myles, who to me demonstrates every CREDIT value.
He appears very polite, which in a time when manners are almost a lost art, to me demonstrates respect. I am really impressed when Myles says: “Good morning, Sir”.
I am aware of his brilliant war poem, which I found very moving, and see him most mornings before school starts, in the Restaurant reading through his notes when others around appear not so keen.
To top it off, Myles asked whether I wanted a hand putting the Restaurant back after a recent Parents’ Evening. I declined the offer but again was taken aback by this young lad’s politeness. Smart as a carrot in his scarf and never dishevelled or caked in mud, this student is a credit to the school.”
Myles was also nominated by Mr. Boyd, Lead Teacher of Music, who said: “Last week, Myles Fairhurst appeared at my classroom door quite early in the morning, asking if we had someone to service our guitars. I told him we used someone in the community, but as most students own their own guitars, we tend not to do much work on our school ones as it would just cost money we don’t really have.
Myles then told me that he has been doing a little repair and set up work on guitars and offered his services. Dave Harris (guitar teacher) found an electric guitar for him that was so old and battered, we were probably going to throw it away. Myles took the guitar home and over the course of the weekend, completely refurbished it to a very high standard.
Dave (and in turn I) were very pleasantly surprised at the standard of Myles’ work and his attention to detail. The guitar is now fully functioning and could easily be used by an advanced player.
Myles spent some of his own money on parts and strings, which he didn’t want payment for – although we do want to get him something. However, the real treat is the paperwork! Myles has set this up as a professional company and supplied us with a full schedule of work and improvements.
What a super student and what a lovely surprise for Dave and I!”
