Andrew was nominated by Mr Boyd who said: “Andrew has been a truly wonderful servant to our music department from the moment he arrived in Year 7, singing Once in Royal David’s City as the soloist in our Christmas Service. Since then, he has joined the choir, then on trombone, the Junior Band, Orchestra, Concert Band, Brass Quintet and Jazz Band. For most of his school life, Andrew has been in more extra-curricular ensembles than any other student or teacher!
Alongside his other interests such as cycling, Andrew has dedicated an enormous amount of time to learning to play the trombone, and his progress over the past few years has been a joy to watch. He is usually found in the music department practising scales, technical exercises and orchestral excerpts. Andrew brings such a high quality of musicianship to our school performances, for instance the Don Lusher-esque trombone solo in the Christmas Song we played with the jazz band this year. Andrew is also a valuable member of community groups, such as the Leyburn Band, the Richmondshire Orchestra and the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band.
Above all that, over the last year or so, Andrew has decided he would like to pursue a career in professional music making and during November/December he auditioned at all the top conservatoires in the UK. Not only did he achieve virtually unconditional offers from all of them, he also received some offers of scholarships too. In the end, Andrew has been offered places at both the prestigious Royal Academy of Music and The Royal College of Music in London, ranked no. 1 and no. 2 in the world for musical studies. Congratulations on such an amazing achievement!”
Mrs Mawer, Andrew’s tutor added: “Andrew’s independence should also be celebrated as he went to all the interviews by himself and he was an outstanding ambassador for Richmond School and comprehensive education. He was competing against students from the top public schools and his ability and personality shone through and he excelled.
He really is a remarkable student who has achieved so much and given so much to both the school and college and always with such good grace and humour.”
