Talking Future Careers – films provide top tips for parents and carers

The support of parents and carers for young people making decisions about their future should never be underestimated, however, it’s also understandable that many can feel overwhelmed and unprepared for such conversations.

As part of the Talking Futures programme, The Gatsby Foundation has created a series of films that provide top tips for parents from parents about how to support children with their career decisions. Over the next few days, we will post these videos so you can hear from a few famous faces about the importance of having conversations with teenagers about their future working lives. In the first video, you can hear from Olympic champion Becky Adlington’s mum. Becky Adlington, has won 4 Olympic medals for the UK and her mum, Kay, shares the importance of asking your child questions about their passions early on in life to help them pursue the career choice that is right for them

Miss Hamer, Careers Adviser said: “These films are an insight into the true value of the support of parents and carers for young people when it comes to making difficult decisions about their futures. In school, we do our best to support every student, and parents and carers can sometimes feel they lack the knowledge and understanding of options and careers paths to really help; but often it’s just support that is needed, not necessarily to provide all the information. These films, along with the other information provided on the Talking Futures website, will hopefully give some tips and guidance on how you can help.”
