Supreme decision by Richmond School Alumna

We are immensely proud of our Alumna, Baroness Hale of Richmond who, as President of the Supreme Court, has made history in this week’s ruling about the unlawful suspension of parliament. Baroness Hale said the unanimous decision of the 11 justices meant Parliament had effectively not been prorogued. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United Kingdom.  The judges, known as justices, have the final say on the biggest legal issues and are the ultimate check and balance on the UK’s laws and constitution. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the United Kingdom.  The judges, known as justices, have the final say on the biggest legal issues and are the ultimate check and balance on the UK’s laws and constitution. Baroness Hale attended Richmond School and went on to study at Cambridge, before teaching law at Manchester University from 1966 to 1984.  She qualified as a barrister and in 1984 was the first woman to be appointed to the Law Commission.  In 1994, she became a High Court judge and, in 1999, became the second woman to be promoted to the Court of Appeal, before becoming the first woman Law Lord. We are very privileged that Baroness Hale retains her links with Richmond School and were delighted when she visited last October to speak to our students.
