Sixth Form students inspired to learn British sign language

21 January 2022  |  Jill Lundberg  |  Posted in: ,

Our Sixth Form students learned about British Sign Language in this week’s Learning for Life session. An inspiring presentation was prepared by Sally Byrom, Lead Learning Manager Key Stage 5, who said: “As an avid viewer of Strictly Come Dancing, I was so impressed and intrigued with the Rose/Giovanni partnership this year. Rose is the first deaf celebrity contestant and throughout the series she brought British Sign Language and the world of the deaf community to popular attention. By the end of the series, the judges, fellow contestants and the presenters were all using small amounts of signing, which was great to see. There has been a huge demand for BSL courses and a massive increase in Google searches since the programme aired.

“I felt that as part of our school and sixth form college Equality and Diversity agenda, it would be a timely opportunity to introduce the students to the world of the deaf community and British Sign Language. Maybe some of the students will even be inspired to take their learning further.”
