ROSE TO REPRESENT TEAM ENGLAND IN FLORIDA CHEERLEADING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Rose Harris, Year 8 student at Richmond School, has been selected to represent the Lazer Cheer Academy’s Ice Queens and Team England at the Summit Cheer Championships held at the Walt Disney World Resort’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Florida.
Rose is one of a number of Richmond School and Sixth Form College students who regularly participate at the Lazer Cheer gym in Catterick. These students train and compete in a wide range of categories, recently achieving great success with three first places and a fourth at Jamfest, a competition held in Blackpool.
Rose currently trains and competes with the Ice Queens team, the U16, Level 2 category. She has been cheerleading since 2016 when she moved from being a gymnast to a cheerleader – Rose’s gymnastic skills are put to very good use in the cheer routines – her tumbling is amazing!
After a successful Jamfest competition in Liverpool last year, Rose attended trials for Team England in London. She was selected for the squad of around 30 athletes and has attended numerous training sessions in London and Coventry since then. The sessions have involved learning the complex routine that they will perform at the championships in Florida, as well as bonding together as a team, an aspect of cheerleading that Rose really enjoys.
One of the team’s main sponsors, Rebel Athletic UK, supply the team uniforms plus other accessories including bags and tracksuits – this is another aspect of being in Team England that Rose enjoys!
Rose will travel out to Florida very soon, with practice sessions starting soon after she arrives. Rose will represent Lazer Cheer’s Ice Queens on the 24th April, then Team England the week after. The qualification stage of the championships will be held on May 2nd, with the finals on the next day if Team England are successful in qualifying.
Rose will be travelling out to Florida with her mum, Nicola. We asked Nicola about Rose and her cheerleading, and what it means for the family. She said: “Rose started cheerleading in August 2016 . She soon realised that she absolutely loved it. She trains six days a week and has quite a few weekend competitions as well. We spend a lot of time running her backwards and forwards to the gym but I know cheer is what makes her who she is. It has made her much more confident and she has a fantastic friendship with her teammates. We are so proud of her winning a bid to compete at the summit in Florida and achieving a place on the team England squad. I am very excited to watch her achieve her dreams while we are away.”
We wish Rose and Team England all the best in Florida and we very much look forward to catching up afterwards to hear about this amazing experience.
