RICHMOND STUDENTS GAIN AN INSIGHT INTO THE LIFE OF A PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER
The latest of Richmond School and Sixth Form College’s ‘Aim High Dream Big’ programme of careers talks saw us welcome Mike White and Ellie Burnside of The Synergy Schools Federation to speak to students.
Mike is a former student of Richmond School and Sixth Form College and is now Executive Headteacher of the Federation of six primary schools and one pre-school. Ellie is the Federation’s teacher training lead and currently works at Crakehall CofE Primary School as their EYFS Teacher.
Ellie and Mike delivered a fantastic assembly to our Year 13 students, with Mike reflecting on his own career journey from Richmond School to the present day. Following the assembly, they delivered a careers talk to a group of Year 11 and Sixth Form students who had taken up the invitation to learn more about a possible career in primary teaching. Ellie delivered an overview of her career journey, talking to students about how her career path was certainly not straightforward. Ellie also gave a great insight into training options and pathways that the students could take as well as talking about the teacher training provision offered through the Synergy Schools Federation and their partnership with local training providers.
Ruth Hamer, Careers Adviser said: ” This was another great opportunity for our students to hear directly from professionals in a career they may be considering pursuing. Many of the students who attended the talk are interested in becoming a primary school teacher in the future. Some have already carried out work experience in a primary school during Year 10 or Year 12, so we were pleased to have been able to offer this chance for them to speak to Ellie and Mike. We hope it has inspired them all. “
Mike White said of his visit to school: “Ellie and I enjoyed our morning with you. It’s always a pleasure to help Richmond School out with anything we can offer – there have always been such strong relationships between the school and its feeder primary schools for many years. For me personally, it’s great to reminisce over my school days and see some familiar faces. We hope that some of the students we spoke to during the morning make a career in primary education – and perhaps we get the chance to train them if they would like to complete their teaching qualification with the Swaledale Alliance and the Synergy Schools Federation in a few years’ time.”
If any students or parents / carers would like more information on teacher training, they can speak to Ruth Hamer, Careers Adviser any time in school or email ruthamer@richmond-alt.uk
Our next ‘Aim High Dream Big’ talk will be a focus on Green Careers with Alyce Morris, alumna, Project Manager at the Wastepack Group.
