RICHMOND SCHOOL MATHS TEACHER COMPETES IN UTMB – ‘THE ULTIMATE TRAIL RACE’

31 August 2023  |  Sven Wardle  |  Posted in: ,

On Friday evening (1700 UK time) Mr. Wigley, a Maths teacher at Richmond School, will be on the start line of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), a 105 mile trail running race which circumnavigates the Mont Blanc Massif passing through France, Italy and Switzerland with over 30,000 ft of elevation gain.

The race is regarded as the pinnacle of the sport with nearly 3,000 runners attempting to finish within 48hrs. Many also have to wait years to qualify via a lottery system.

Mr. Wigley is an elite runner for @inov8 and was fortunate enough to obtain an entry to the UTMB after finishing 3rd at Ultra Trail Snowdonia in May – the photos on this post are of Mr. Wigley competing in and finishing this race.

This year is the most competitive field of elite athletes ever assembled for the UTMB. It should be some show!

Bib number 105,  Mr. Wigley’s progress during the race can be tracked via a link in his instagram profile (@wildwigley) or at this address:

There is also a live stream on YouTube of the whole race – just search for UTMB.

We wish Mr. Wigley all the best as he competes with the best trail runners in the world at this prestigious event. Good luck!
