Lucy Adlington’s ‘History wardrobe and the dressmakers of Auschwitz’
Adlington’s 2021 “The Dressmakers of Auschwitz” novel tells the harrowing true story of twenty five Jewish women in Auschwitz-Birkenau who were selected to create fashionable clothing for Nazi Germany’s elite women. These women worked in the “Obere Nähstube” (“upper tailoring studio”) which had been established by Hedwig Höss (wife of a commandant) and seemed to be the womens best chance at survival. Adlington’s novel offers a unique perspective on what many may consider a relatively unknown part of World War two history including interviews with the last surviving dressmaker herself.
Adlington’s love for all things vintage and with over twenty years of experience as a clothes historian led her to become founder of History Wardrobe which has allowed her historic clothing collections to have been put on showcase in various museums such as the Bankfield museum in Halifax . Adlington has also appeared on BBC Radio’s Woman’s hour where she discussed the history of underwear. As well as this she has gone on to write a series of non-fiction and fiction novels based around her research.
Come along and join historian Lucy Adlington as she discusses her New York Times bestseller “The Dressmakers of Auschwitz: The true story of the women who sewed to survive” accompanied with a presentation and showcase of garments from the era. The event itself shall take place on Monday 18th September 2023 at the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond at 7:30.
