LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS GO HEAD TO HEAD IN CLOSELY FOUGHT MATHS COMPETITION

Richmond School and Sixth Form College recently welcomed ten local primary schools for the 15th annual 24s Competition.
The 24 Game is a mental arithmetic card game based on making a total of 24 using four digits. All four digits must be used to make 24 by adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying.
Each primary school brought four students and over the course of the morning competed in a head-to-head contest against the other schools.
The often tense and fast moving games were adjudicated by a group of 12 Richmond School maths students, selected from a Year 9 class taught by Mr Wigley, maths teacher and chief organiser of the competition. The students had been selected beforehand by playing the 24 Game against each other in class. The 12 highest performers earned the right to be adjudicators at the competition!
In a very close contest, Bainbridge, Askrigg and West Burton came third, Richmond Methodist came second and Brompton-on-Swale emerged victorious for the second year running.
The Richmond School Maths department, who organise the competition, were extremely impressed by the mental arithmetic displayed by all the students in attendance. We look forward to inviting the schools back again next year.
