Richmond School recently hosted two large scale primary school cricket tournaments – The North Yorkshire Regional Finals for Years 3 and 4 then Years 5 and 6. Tom Bates, Club and Community Development Manager for North Yorkshire cricket provides this report:
“This year we hosted our North Yorkshire Regional Finals at Richmond School. Both our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 OPEN competitions were at Richmond School’s brilliant venue and a huge thank you to the school for providing excellent young leaders for the events. Work was done prior to the competitions with the support of the School Games Organiser for the Richmondshire Area, Mrs Carruthers, to get the leaders trained up by myself and Mark Jobling from the Yorkshire Cricket Board. Across both days, the staff and parents who came to watch were very complimentary of the leaders who were a credit to the school.
First was the Year 3/4 Open Finals on Tuesday 11th June. We had 11 schools competing on the day across the region – those were:
Richmond St Marys (Richmondshire SGO)
Broomfield School (Hambleton SGO)
Pannal Primary (Harrogate SGO)
AYJS (York SGO)
Wigginton Primary (York SGO)
Eastburn Primary (Craven SGO)
Gladstone Road Primary (Scarborough SGO)
Whinneybanks Primary (Middlesbrough SGO)
Kirkby Moorside (Ryedale SGO)
Saltburn Primary (Guisborough SGO)
St Alphonsus (Nicholas Postgate Catholic Schools SGO)
On what was a fantastic day of cricket, Pannal Primary narrowly scraped past Saltburn Primary to book their place to Headingley where they will represent the whole of North Yorkshire! A great effort. The final was a replay of Game #1 of the day which Saltburn won!
Well done to all 11 teams on making it to the North Yorkshire Finals and best of luck to Pannal at Headingley on Friday 5th July!
The Year 5/6 Finals on June 20th was a scorcher! Richmond School again provided a fantastic backdrop for some excellent cricket throughout the day. Once again, the leaders put in an amazing shift – umpiring confidently throughout the day.
We had 12 teams this time from across North Yorkshire who had qualified through their area finals. Two groups of six, with the top two in each group qualifying for the semi – finals. The schools competing on the day were:
Richmond Methodist (Richmondshire SGO)
Richmond St Marys (Richmondshire SGO)
Romanby Primary (Hambleton SGO)
Oatlands Junior School (Harrogate SGO)
Dunnington Primary (York SGO)
St Wilfrids (York SGO)
Glusburn Primary (Craven SGO)
St Peters School (Scarborough SGO)
Kadar Primary (Middlesbrough SGO)
Kirkby Moorside (Ryedale SGO)
Saltburn Primary (Guisborough SGO)
St Alphonsus (Nicholas Postgate Catholic Schools SGO)
The semi-final line up consisted of Richmond Methodist v Oatlands Junior School and Kirkby Moorside v St Alphonsus
It was between Richmond Methodist and St Alphonsus in the final – Richmond Methodist winning on home soil to claim the North Yorkshire Crown.
The Yorkshire Finals have now been completed, and I am delighted to announce that Richmond Methodist Finished 3rd in the whole of Yorkshire with Oatlands Junior School becoming Yorkshire Champions.
The strength of school cricket in North Yorkshire is incredible and without the support of Richmond School and its amazing staff and leaders this couldn’t be done.
A huge thank-you to everyone involved and we will definitely see you again next year! (if you’ll have us!)”
