Liam joins the fire cadets

A community-spirited student is pursuing his dream to work in the emergency services. Liam Hogg, in Year 9, responded to a post on the school’s Instagram page about opportunities to become a cadet in the Fire Brigade and has signed up to the programme.

Liam attends the cadets for two hours every Monday evening where he is really enjoying a packed programme of activities. He is learning about all aspects of the fire engine, doing ladder-climbing drills, using all the fire-fighting equipment, practising removing of passengers from crashed cars, smoke simulators as well as helping out on community days around Richmondshire. There is also training on basic first aid and what to do in an emergency and the cadets fundraise for local, national and international charities.

Liam is hoping to become a police dog handler when he leaves school and sees this as an opportunity to work alongside other emergency services.

On completion of the two-year cadet course, Liam will achieve a BTEC Level 2 Award in Fire and Rescue Services in the community.

Well done Liam, this is fantastic!
