Josh signs new long-term contract with Boro

20 January 2022  |  Jill Lundberg  |  Posted in: ,

We are so proud of Josh Coburn who has made an impressive start to his football career in Middlesbrough’s Academy and has now pledged his future to the club with a new contract.

The 19-year-old former student and striker has signed a deal until 2025 that also includes a further year’s option.  Josh scored his first professional goal against Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season, and has had a whirlwind start to his career having found the target a further three times in eight appearances this season.

Academy Manager Craig Liddle added: “Josh is our newest graduate that has made it into the first-team and probably one that every supporter was hoping that we would produce a number nine. That’s one of the things that gets mentioned quite a bit. We’ve produced a lot of players but not an out-and-out centre forward. Josh going in there and scoring goals for the first team has given everyone a boost.

“He typifies what we look for in the Academy, not only for a technically and tactically good player, but also a fantastic young man who leads by example.”

Kieran Scott, Boro’s Head of Football, added: “We’re delighted Josh has signed for the long-term. He has had an excellent start to his career, but he still has plenty to learn and will continue to develop as a player over the next few years. This club has a great history of producing and developing young players and Josh is another credit to our Academy.”

Josh said: “I am so happy that I have been offered this fantastic opportunity. Boro are a great club with great coaches and staff. I feel incredibly privileged to be part of the first team squad and hope that I can do the Boro fans proud and score plenty of goals in the future.”

Tom Westgate, PE Teacher, concluded: “This is fantastic news for Josh. He demonstrated from a young age that he had the skill, passion and commitment to succeed and thoroughly deserves this opportunity.”

We will continue to follow his progress and look forward to sharing news of further successes with you.
