The next report in our mini-series of posts, rounding up the achievements of the students who have played girls’ football this term. If you’ve missed previous reports, just look back in the timeline.

REPORT 4: U13 VS BRAYTON ACADEMY – COUNTY CUP ROUND OF 16 – 6-3.

The round of 16 in the County Cup saw Richmond travel away to Brayton Academy, a fixture which had been re-arranged due the heavy snowfall at the start of January.

A quick goal early on from Pippa was followed up by a contentious goal from Charlee, striking the ball into the net on the line from Phoebe’s shot. It still remains undecided as to who scored the goal, Charlee or Phoebe, but the goal saw Richmond take a quick 2-0 lead over the opposition.

The game evened out after this, with Brayton Academy having a couple of chances to attack but some resolute defending from Orla, Chloe, Daisy and Eleanor kept the clean sheet intact. In the midfield, Annie and Pippa forced the ball forward to the wingers, Phoebe and Freya who were a constant threat. Eventually the ball broke from the right-hand side, Phoebe played the ball in for Liv to tap home her first goal of the game: Richmond were 3-0 up. Close the end of the 1st half, the Richmond forwards had another chance to score. The Brayton keeper made a good save however, but ball fell into the path of Annie, who fired it into the bottom corner and made the game 4-0.

The second half started with a lot of pressure from Brayton who scored two quick goals – nothing the Richmond defence could have done. The score swung to 4-2. Conceding two quick goals spurred Richmond back into action and put the pressure on Brayton. Liv had several chances, testing the keeper. It seemed another goal was in sight for the Richmond girls. This proved to be the case when Charlee was brought down inside the box and a penalty was awarded. Pippa stepped up and calmly put the ball in the back of the net to make the game 5-2.

Brayton academy then replied in kind by scoring immediately from the kick off, bringing the game back within 2 goals – 5-3. The rest of the game played out with both teams creating chance after chance, but breathing space for Richmond was made when Liv scored her second goal of the game, taking the ball on the counter from Daisy at left back which beat the Brayton defence. Liv burst ahead of the defenders onto the pass and scored to make the game 6-3.

The U13 girls are through to the quarter final of the County Cup where they will face Ryedale school.
