GERMAN CAREER ROADSHOW – DURHAM UNIVERSITY
Mrs Cheesbrough, MFL teacher at Richmond School, recently accompanied a group of students to Durham University to take part in a Career Roadshow, run by the Goethe Institut. She provides this report from what sounds like an excellent day:
“Richmond School is a PASCH* Schule, part of a global network of schools whose aim is to awaken interest and enthusiasm for German and Germany today. As part of our involvement with the PASCH initiative, 49 Richmond School students from Year 9 recently attended the German Career Roadshow at Durham University, organised by the Goethe Institut.
*The term PASCH means “Schools: Partners for the Future”
The students spent the morning visiting workshops and stalls, which provided them with an insight from experts into the opportunities German can offer, as well as learning about the importance of language skills in a career context. With Germany continuing to be one of the UK’s top trading partners, the German Career Roadshow provided an ideal setting for our young people to find out more about the opportunities German(y) offers and to gain insight into the importance of language skills for the UK job market.
The students began their day with an introduction from Professor Welch, Head of the School of Modern Foreign Languages and Cultures, where he impressed upon them the multitude of doors learning a language opens. It was inspiring to hear someone talk about the career pathways available to them, as well as how sought after German is to UK employers compared to other EU and world languages. It sparked several of our students to get up and ask questions about their own future with languages. Next up the students took part in a quiz against at least 20 other teams and schools, to test their knowledge of German culture and history. Richmond team Rosie, Tegan, Serafyma, Izzy, Amelie and Gabriella came away victorious!
We ended the day visiting several stalls to further learn about studying and working in German(y). Students came away with some very interesting pieces of information, along with multiple prizes for their German knowledge.
They represented Richmond School brilliantly, and we hope the visit inspired them with their language learning.”
