FORMER RICHMOND STUDENT RETURNS TO INSPIRE YEAR 11 AND 12 ABOUT GEOGRAPHY

20 March 2025  |  Sven Wardle  |  Posted in: ,

We were delighted to welcome Alyce Morris into school recently to deliver a fantastic assembly to our Year 12 students, as well as careers talks to all our GCSE Geography students.

Alyce currently works as a Project Manager for The Wastepack Group and has over 20 years’ experience working in the Environmental Services Industry. Alyce attended Richmond School, completing her GCSEs and then her A Levels at Richmond Sixth Form College.

The very entertaining assembly also took students through the reality of navigating life after school and college, looking at her journey through her geography degree at Manchester, her master’s degree in Environmental Management and Sustainable Development, and the various jobs she has undertaken throughout her career. She reassured students that you do not always need to know exactly what you want to do, but that it is important to explore and research options as early as possible. Alyce also reiterated the importance of work experience, part time work and volunteering in order to develop essential employability skills and the advantages this can bring when applying for jobs and courses in the future.

Alyce then delivered careers talks to over 300 of our Year 10, Year 11 and A Level Geography students, focusing on jobs related to geography. Alyce talked about all the different types of careers and pathways that can link to geography and many which students may not automatically think about.

Alyce said of her day with us: “I thoroughly enjoyed speaking to students about geography careers, as well as my own educational and professional journey. Geography is key to sustainability and the environment and there are many diverse career options available. If I have encouraged even one person to consider a future in this important and ever-changing field, I would be really happy. “

Ruth Hamer, Careers Adviser adds “We are so lucky to have had Alyce join us and cannot thank her enough for giving up her time to speak to our students. I really hope Alyce’s visit has inspired some of our students to pursue geography studies in the future, and to really think about the huge variety of jobs and careers available. “
