Richmond Sixth Form College student Andrew Lunn recently enjoyed a wonderful opportunity in York as he participated in a masterclass and then recital with the world-renowned trombonist Ian Bousfield.

Ian was Principal Trombone with the London Symphony Orchestra for many years and can be heard in films such as Star Wars, Harry Potter as well as many incredible classical recordings with the world’s greatest conductors.

Ian then moved on to be the Principal Trombone for the Vienna Philharmic Orchestra. Ian now spends his time giving recitals and masterclasses all over the world.

Andrew was invited to take part in the session which was organised by York Music Hub. Andrew played one of the pieces he has been working on for his conservatoire auditions this autumn. He received constructive critique from Ian and help with some technical aspects of playing the trombone.

Andrew was then invited to perform his piece as part of Ian’s afternoon recital to a packed audience of brass players.

Stephen Boyd, Lead Teacher of Music at Richmond School and Sixth Form College, said: “I am delighted that Andrew was able to take up this opportunity. Andrew has become an outstanding trombone player and it is wonderful that he is now able to perform at this level with such accomplished musicians – they don’t come any bigger than Ian Bousfield in the trombone world!”
