ALFIE SHOWS GREAT FORM WITH RICHMONDSHIRE RUFC U16S

As we regularly mention, many of our students are involved in sport and other extra-curricular activities, not just in school, but also out in the local community.

Rugby is particularly strong locally, with a number of clubs offering young players fantastic opportunities to train and play, and even progress into area and county sides, if not beyond!

We recently received the story below about one of our year 11 students, who plays for Richmonshire RUFC.

Alfie Leonard-Howard, Year 11 student at Richmond School, has shown a great streak of good form in recent games and training sessions for Richmondshire RUFC recently. Cameron Smith, Year 13 student and fellow player at Richmond, said: “Alfie has been unstoppable in the last two matches he’s played for the U16s: away at Redcar and Barnard Castle – 44-29 and 52-24 respectively. He scored a hat-trick and was awarded and man-of-the-match in both games. He’s definitely a player to watch!”

Alfie’s dad, Leigh, who coaches the squad, said: “”Alfie has been putting a lot of time and effort into his rugby recently, attending team training at Richmondshire RUFC on a Friday night. He has also been attending the senior men’s training sessions twice a week and learning a lot about how the adults play the game. This has been evident in recent matches where he’s been able to read what’s happening on the pitch and know where the gaps in defence will allow him to run hard lines through them enabling him to score tries. One team even called him a “tank” as they handed him MOTM!”

Richmondshire RUFC is actively recruiting young players – have a word with Alfie or Cameron at school if you’re interested! Training is on Fridays 6-7pm.

We love hearing about individual and team performances from any team or individual, any age group and any sport or activity. We will always endeavour to publish an article celebrating the achievements of our students if we receive information from parents / carers – just email swardle@richmond-alt.uk
