24s MATHS CHALLENGE IS A HIT WITH PRIMARY STUDENTS

16 June 2023  |  Jill Lundberg  |  Posted in: ,

Now in its 14th year, the 24s Maths Challenge was a huge hit with primary students.  The event challenges students to make the total of 24 by using all four numbers on the playing card once each – they can add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Students played a round robin of matches against other schools in 6-minute rounds with the aim of gaining as many points as possible in each round by winning cards.  The winning team explains how to get 24 before the other team and the school with the most points at the end is the winner.

Year 5 and 6 students from 8 schools took part and our Year 9 student helpers adjudicated each match and ran the scoreboard.

Brompton-on-Swale were the winners scoring over 1,000 points. Runners up were St Mary’s RC and Trinity Academy Richmond.

Rebecca Collier, Maths Teacher, said: “”I am always very impressed by the high level of mathematical ability exhibited by the primary students.  It is a lovely event that celebrates mental maths and it is one of my favourite days of the year.  I must thank the Year 9 students who worked excellently as a team to make the event such a great success.”
