Sixth Form | Higher Education - Redbrick Support Group
Richmond School Redbrick Support Group
For those considering applying to Oxbridge or for competitive courses at ‘Redbrick’ Universities
This group is intended for those who are considering applying to Oxford or Cambridge Universities or for very competitive courses at prestigious universities where having three A grades at A level is no longer sufficient to gain an offer! Any students are welcome to attend but it is expected that students attend regularly once they start.
Potential Oxbridge candidates are identified early and supported throughout the entire application process initially as part of an overall enhancement programme for gifted and talented students. A visit from a member of Oxford University Outreach Team on 30th January will allow students in Year 12 to consider whether Oxbridge might be of interest to them. There will also be a visit to the Oxbridge Conference in Newcastle on 28th March at which both universities and many faculties are represented. Students are invited to consider subject choices and understand the kind of fascination with a subject that may result in a successful application. In June and early July the school runs residential trips to both Oxford and Cambridge, giving students the chance to view colleges and attend Open Day seminars with which the visits coincide.
From February of the Spring Term of Year 12 and in the Autumn Term of Year 13, weekly meetings are held with all applicants where the students research a subject of their choice. They then present this to their peers and answer questions as an aid to developing interview skills. Personal statements are submitted early and specialist guidance is given by the Sixth Form team to ensure these are of the highest quality.
Finally, as the calls for interviews come in, applicants are invited to attend mock interviews by members of senior leadership and also by subject specialists. Throughout the process, Oxbridge is taken seriously as being a real option for many of our most academically able students and we have a robust Oxbridge programme in place to assist them fulfil their ambitions.
First meeting in 2012: Thursday 2nd February, 3.05pm in SG17
