KS5
AS Year
Introduces the basic theories and concepts associated with the Anatomy and Physiology, Skill Acquisition/Motor Learning and Sociology, and their application to the World of Sport and Physical Education. These applications are further emphasised in practical sessions that ensure students can pursue excellence in their chosen sports and/or the development of physical activity. The practical component of this course focuses in a coaching perspective, requiring the student to produce a sports portfolio which forms a major piece of assessed coursework.
Modules
• Anatomy and Physiology
• Acquisition of Skill
• Sociology of Sport and Contemporary Studies
A2 Year
The second year of study builds on that developed during year one, concentrating in the following theoretical areas of study: exercise physiology, psychology of sport, and the history of sport and physical education.
Modules
• Exercise Physiology
• Psychology
• History of Sport
Practical sessions again focus on improving performance in your chosen sport, but the emphasis is placed on the understanding of performance from the perspective of a sports scientist, e.g. students develop the ability to apply and explain sports performance based on their theoretic studies. For the practical component, students select a sporting activity to study from the perspective of a performer, a coach and a sports scientist with their experiences and work being assessed via a written and oral examination. All students engage in a Mountain Activities practical 3-day expedition that is part of the sports portfolio.
It must be emphasised that a high standard of performance in a particular sport is NOT required in order to be successful at A Level Physical Education. Students will be taught by at least two members of staff. Past students have progressed to University studying courses in Sports Science, Physical Education, Sports Studies, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Recreation Management, Law, Geography and Classics.
