Oxbridge Support Group
Potential Oxbridge candidates are identified early and supported throughout the entire application process initially as part of an overall enhancement programme for gifted and talented students. A visit from a member of Oxford University Outreach team in Nov/Dec allows students in Year 12 to consider whether Oxbridge might be of interest to them. A visit to the Oxbridge conference held in Newcastle takes place in the spring where both universities and many faculties are represented. Students are invited to consider subject choices and understand the kind of fascination with a subject that may result in a successful application. In June and early July the school runs residential trips to both Oxford and Cambridge, giving students the chance to view colleges and attend Open Day seminars with which the visits coincide.
In the autumn term of Year 13, weekly meetings are held with all applicants where the students research a subject of their choice. They then present this to their peers and answer questions as an aid to developing interview skills. Personal statements are submitted early and specialist guidance is given by the Sixth Form team to ensure these are of the highest quality.
Finally, as the calls for interviews come in, applicants are invited to attend mock interviews by members of senior management and also by subject specialists. Throughout the process, Oxbridge is taken seriously as being a real option for many of our most academically able students and we have a robust Oxbridge programme in place to assist them fulfil their ambitions.
Congratulations to Christian Shepherd for his recent successful application to Jesus College, Oxford to read Philosophy.
