Sixth Form | Dentistry, Medicine & Veterinary Support Group
Dentistry, Medicine & Veterinary Medicine (DMV) Support Group
Aims of the group
The aim of this group is to provide support for any Year 11 to 13 students who express an interest in Dentistry, Medicine or Veterinary Medicine.
With experience of students applying for these careers over many years, we are aware they will face particular challenges. The support and guidance provided by the group can improve their chances of successful application.
We know how important it is that students are identified early and we do this when the students express their career preferences, as well as all students who are interested having an invitation to join the group. They are encouraged to consider the most appropriate A Level subject choices and are made aware of the level of achievement expected of them in pursuit of their goal.
Support is provided through meetings in school and access to a virtual support group which contains a variety of resources, providing information, help and guidance for members.
Applying to University
The guidance and support received from the Sixth form team during the application process is supplemented with meetings with current practitioners and University students and meetings are held to discuss personal statements early in the Autumn term. In 2008/2009 members of the support group benefited from meetings with current Medicine and Veterinary Medicine students and a local General Practitioner, who also works at Hull-York Medical School.
Interviews
The interview process can initially seem daunting to some students but it is a fantastic opportunity for a student to display their personal qualities and demonstrate their level of commitment and awareness of current issues in their chosen career. Therefore, as interview offers are received, a mock interview will be arranged to improve their interview technique and build confidence.
Work experience
Applicants are expected to have arranged and completed a range of work experience placements and provide evidence of their commitment to their chosen vocation. Students are encouraged to create work experience portfolios in which they can demonstrate this. Guidance is also given to ensure students make the most of their opportunities whilst on placement.
Students at Richmond School are encouraged to pursue their ambitions and with the additional support from the DMV group, our aim is for them to fulfil their potential and achieve their goal of a career in Dentistry, Medicine or Veterinary Medicine.
