Richmond School | AS Resit Advice

AS resit advice and guidance.

1. Analyse your results

Once you have obtained your AS results, please look carefully at the module scores you have achieved for each unit as well as the overall grade (if you have one at this stage).

2. Should you do a resit?

There is no limit to the number of times you can resit a unit and the exam board will always credit you with your best mark, so if a resit score was lower, an earlier, higher score would still stand. The final A2 result is simply the sum of AS + A2 scores and AS scores are easier to achieve than A2 ones. The next piece of advice depends on the time of year you have gained the result:

AS result in March of Year 12

AS result in the summer at the end of Year 12

continuing with the subject at A2

dropping the subject at A2

If you have done an ‘early module’ you need to consider whether the grade and the score match your potential. Improving a unit score at this stage could be good for your overall AS result in the summer. As the University Application Form (UCAS) expects you to declare your AS result, it could be advisable to do a resit to be sure you achieve your best AS grade.

If you intend to continue on with the subject at A2, then the AS grade itself is less of an issue, but the module scores are. If you feel that you could improve your overall score (not necessarily the grade) then doing a resit may improve your chances of achieving your potential at A2. (Either by making sure you achieve a particular grade at A2 or even achieving a higher one). So even if you gained an A grade overall at AS, if the score was just inside the A grade boundary, doing a resit to improve the AS score may make your final A2 result more secure.

If you are intending to drop the subject but are still disappointed with the grade, then doing a resit of one or more of the modules to improve the AS grade is an option.

3. What to do now

Discuss your results with your subject teachers/Head of Department as soon as possible. They will know what your potential for each module was and can guide you as to whether you can gain more marks from doing a resit.

4. Issues to consider

Be aware of the additional work that you would have to do for the next exam session and do not underestimate the impact this will have on ongoing work. We would advise that you do no more than 4 resits at one session. This may mean that you will have to delay some resits until a later exam session. You are responsible for the cost of a resit and this money needs to accompany a completed resit form.

5. Resit application forms

These will be available from the Sixth Form College Reception and they need to be filled in and signed off by your Head of Department, your parents and your tutor. They will have to be handed in along with the appropriate money by a specific deadline, which will be notified to the Sixth Form.
